Milling of Plastics: Semiconductor Industry

A customer in the semiconductor industry was in need of precision CNC milling which was to be performed on an existing component. The part was composed of PFA-450 fluoropolymer, a type of thermoplastic, which possesses non-stick and friction reducing properties. This project required milling of a pocket that was 8.642″ deep, with a diameter of .560″. Due to the process specifications milling on this type of material causes tool chatter which greatly reduces the precision of the finished product. J & J Machine developed a process to modify the geometry of the tooling to overcome this obstacle, and was able to eliminate chatter entirely during production. The finished part maintained tolerances of +/- .006″ on the pocket width and height.


Custom CNC Milling of Titanium Parts

Serving the semiconductor industry, J&J Machine provides custom CNC milling services to customers who require innovative solutions.

This customer needed J&J to create a 6.000″ deep Ø.2845″ diameter blind hole into grade 5 titanium, and finish it with a 5/16-24 thread.  With a #63 micro finish, and tolerances of ±.015″, this was no easy task. Heat being a major concern, we had to develop a method that would not allow work hardening.  In addition, removal of chips from a 6″ deep hole of such a small diameter was also an issue.

Creating a solution that would provide for all of these factors required extensive R & D. We began by sampling a large number of existing cutting tools, and pushed them to their limits. The data we gleaned from this testing allowed us to design a custom tool that provided low enough friction to control heat and evacuate chips.


Fluropolymer Components: Semiconductor Industry

J&J Machine’s state of the art facility is equipped with the cutting edge equipment, and skilled machinists, that allows us to work with a variety of materials and sizes. A client in the semiconductor industry required quality CNC milling of a large diameter plastic part.  Measuring 27″ in diameter, and 1″ in thickness, it was composed of fluropolymer, and required finished thicknesses from 1.000″ to .118″, with a #63 micro finish, all while holding tolerances of ±.001″.

Proper fixturing on a part of this size and material is critical, managing vibration and harmonics is key to maintaining the precision required. We utilized a system of vacuum fixturing that allowed for the high precision that was required, while controlling the added stresses that the process could potentially produce.
